Clearing the way for content we want

The number one reason I with from one streaming service to another when I’m looking for something to watch is finding something new in categories I like. Using Netflix as a case study, I built this gamification of content search that I believe will be the next ‘big idea’ in our content streaming experience.

Solution

For a while I’ve had this idea and Finally decided to create a prototype. My solution gamifies content searching allowing the user to clear out content they know they will never consume to make space for new content.

Action

I made the category title a menu bar giving the user many new options to configure their home page, add to their library, and filter out content they will never view. When the user arrows down their homepage, the category is now a button that will open a new experience for finding content. Using the arrow up, down, left and right buttons found on every remote, users can quickly view information about the content that will fade away after 15 seconds while the trailer plays behind it to give them the quickest idea of whether they want to watch or not. To add the content to their ‘Watch' list’ they can clicking up and to add it to their ‘Not interested’ list by clicking down, which can be accessed if they change their mind.

The navigation for this experience also allows the user to move click right to skip making a decision and view the next content or click left to undo a decision or exit the experience retiring them to the homepage.
